It’s Not Just About Work

Lately, we have been spending a lot of time thinking about the “Theology of Work.”  Right now this idea is one of the hot buzz words in Christian circles.  The idea is that the time we spend at our work can greatly influence the world around us for the Kingdom.  But what exactly is work?

According to experts, you will probably spend nearly one hundred thousand hours at your job. So if you have a typical “9-5,” then that’s obviously your work.  Do you clean houses 3 days a week?  That’s your work.  Do you stay at home to raise your children?  Then that’s your work.

Only it isn’t so simple.

Do you coach a children’s sports team?  Volunteer for after-school programs?   Are you getting into photography?  Do you journal or blog?  Scripture says “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”  (Colossians 3:23 ESB)  So these activites and hobbies are also your work.

Work.  Leisure.  Sabbath.  Holy.  Mundane.  Anything.

Whatever you do.

So then, the Theology of Work really isn’t about work at all.  It’s a theology about how God values the tasks we perform, the causes we take up, the relationships we cultivate, and the things we do.
