People of Light

When Jesus spoke again he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
– John 8:12

I am amazed at light. Scientists tell us that light is both a particle and a wave. Little pieces of light are bouncing everywhere around us at every moment. In fact, the only reason we can see at all is that some of this light is constantly bouncing into our eyes.

I have a small night light in my kitchen with just the tiniest little dot of an LED light bulb. During the day the light looks like a pitiful white speck, unable to light up so much as the inside of a teacup. But at night, that singular white speck is a brilliant white beacon that casts long shadows all over the room, ensuring that I don’t trip over the staircase or tread upon some errant building blocks.

If you are following after Jesus, his light is in you. This light is the contagious nature of a life lived imitating Jesus and is manifested in the lives of his followers. Ephesians 5:8-9 tells us that we are to live as people of light, and that light produces only what is good, right and true.

Even if there have been times where your light has been obscured by things other than the good, right or true, the scriptural truth is this: you have light within you. It comes from the Lord. It doesn’t matter how you might have fallen short or if you think there is no way you could possibly shine. As a child of God, you are a steward of Christ’s presence within your soul and his light is in you.
